THE NUMBER ONE NAME

Psalm 29:2

"Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness." ESV

To ascribe is to acknowledge the source or owner of something. God's name is the source of all that is love, wisdom, and power. We are to honor His name as such in our worship and in our daily walk. Our worship is not dependent on our display of worship that others see. Our worship is counted as holy when our hearts are clean and humble.

Lord, You are the source of all things good and holy. May we bring honor to Your name at all times. And, help us to always come to You with clean and humble hearts. In Your magnificent name we pray, Amen.

EXTREME MAKE OVER

Romans 12:1,2

"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." ESV

What exactly is a "living sacrifice?" It is dedication of our total selves to God. This includes giving our physical bodies. Just as Jesus gave His body for us through death, we willingly give our living bodies for His service. We give our minds to Him so that He will transform our thinking through prayer and study of the Word. We give Him our wills so that by obedience and faith, He changes us into victorious Christians. This is true worship.

Heavenly Father, we cannot offer ourselves as total living sacrifices without the help of the Holy Spirit. We ask that You help us to be open, ready, and willing to give ourselves totally to You. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

HERE WE ARE, LORD

Romans 12:1

"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship." ESV

If we want to worship our Lord in the way that is the most pleasing to Him, what would we be doing? Would we be spending hours a day in deep prayer? That is certainly a noble service. Would we be reading and studying our Bibles with great focus and thought? Of course that would be very good for our spiritual growth. But what would be the most pleasing thing to Him? It is giving our daily lives, our everyday living to Him to use as He sees fit. It is laying ourselves out before Him without any agenda but to be used by Him. That is the way we worship Him!

Heavenly Father, we are so blessed by Your mercy to us. We know that in ourselves we have nothing we can give You that would repay what You have done for us. We come before You, giving You all we have, our daily lives, for Your pleasure. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

WHO'S THE PHONY?

Isaiah 29:13

"And the Lord said: Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men." ESV

The Lord is well acquainted with our hearts. He notices when anyone goes through the motions, gathers with believers, and speaks praises, but there is an absence of worship from the heart and a true righteous hunger for the things of God. Some even fail to realize they are engaging in empty worship. The great deception lies in the belief that tradition, outward actions, and church rules equal true worship. Some have simply become lazy and complacent, letting their spirits grow cold.

Heavenly Father, we have been guilty of insincere worship and humbly ask You for forgiveness. Give us that first love, that hunger and zeal to seek You and worship You with a true and contrite heart. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

LET'S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS

Psalm 95:6

"Come let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker." NIV

"O come, let us worship and bow done; let us kneel before the Lord our maker." KJV

The gesture of bowing and kneeling before another is a true representation of humility and giving honor. How many times do we "pay our respects" to the Lord God Almighty as we rush through our morning routine, as we fight the traffic to our place of work, as we wrestle the children off to school? Or do we squeeze in a quick prayer of "God help me" when we get carted off by the stress of the day? Shame on us! If we are truly sincere about worshipping our God, we will prepare our hearts before Him in humbleness and sincerity. We will set aside time, often, to bow before the Creator of the universe, and offer to Him the worship He so rightly deserves.

Heavenly Father, search our hearts and reveal to us the manner in which we offer worship to You. We may not like what we see about ourselves, but we ask for Your forgiveness for rushing through such a critical time with You. Give us hearts of true worship and a hunger to set aside things that are unnecessary so that we can give of ourselves in the right manner of worship to You. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

COME TO HIM WITH SINGING

Psalm 100:2

"Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs." NIV

"Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing." KJV

If we made a list of all the things we have to be upset about and a list of all the blessings we have, there is no doubt the list of blessings would outweigh the other. Why then, do we come to the Lord, heavy with burdens that we should have already given to Him, trusting that He is working them out. Do we have to wait until the answer is complete before we approach our God with joyful hearts and singing? Of course not! We can come to Him in full confidence that He is working out all our problems. All we need to do is come to Him full of joy, singing in our hearts because our God is faithful and will never forsake us.

Heavenly Father, forgive us for not using the faith You have given us, to know we don't have to carry around our burdens and approach You with heavy hearts. Give us hearts of joy and gladness, because we trust in You to take care of all our problems. Let us sing praises to You for the many blessings You give us each and every day. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

SHHHHH! GOD IS

Habakkuk 2:20
"The Lord is in His holy temple; let all the earth be silent before Him." NIV

"But the Lord is in His holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before Him." KJV

Where is God's temple? His temple is where He is and He is omnipresent, meaning He is everywhere and there is no place where He is not. There is no power or authority that can stand before Him and question His majesty and holiness. The whole earth sits as one who cannot speak because the greatness of God Almighty is true throughout eternity. Isn't it critical that we take time to acknowledge our God, His presence, and His glory? If our time doesn't allow us to be still before Him in worship, we need to rearrange our schedules.

Heavenly Father, we recognize You as the Supreme Creator and Authority over all. We humbly stand in Your presence and praise You with our whole being. Help us to walk worthy before You and be obedient to You. In the name of Jesus' we pray, Amen.

GOD IS SPIRIT

John 4:24

"God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in the Spirit and in truth." NIV

"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." KJV

Of course God is spirit. We know He is not confined to a physical body or any other kind of containment. He is omnipresent (everywhere). How then, can we call ourselves true worshippers if we are merely going through motions, following a program, mindlessly singing a hymn or repeating a memorized or written prayer. That is not true worship. That is going through the motions of worship. True worship is bringing ourselves into the very presence of God with humble hearts of thanksgiving and praise. It is drawing near to Him with our hearts and minds totally focused on Him and His awesomeness. When we leave the scene of true worship, we are changed and know we have been in the very presence of the Lord God almighty.

Heavenly Father, forgive us for our complacency and failure to give You our hearts and minds in worship. Put a burning desire within us to worship You in spirit and truth so that we will know the joy of being in Your presence and that we will become more like You. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.

FORGIVE AND BE FORGIVEN

Matthew 6:14

"For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you."NIV

"For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you."KJV

To forgive those who have wronged us is not a natural inclination for us. But, the Lord says we are to forgive others or else we will not be forgiven. To forgive others is to put away any wrong they have done and never bring it back. That's what our Lord does with our sins. He throws them to the bottom of the ocean and remembers them no more. We all need forgiveness, so we also need to learn to forgive.

Heavenly Father, we ask for humble hearts to forgive those who have wronged us and hurt us. Make us aware of our own wrongs so that we can confess them and ask for Your forgiveness. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

PRAISE HIM OR THE STONES WILL

Luke 19:39,40

"Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, 'Teacher, rebuke your disciples!' 'I tell you,' he replied, 'if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.'"NIV

"And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out."KJV

We are God's most prized of His creation. It is right that we praise Him continually for His great love and grace. If we as His prized creation stop praising Him, the stones that are a part of His lower creation will break out in praise to Him. We wouldn't want the stones to rob us of our great privilege to praise our Lord.

Heavenly Father, may we always have praise on our lips that come from hearts of gratefulness to our Lord who is worthy of all praise. We pray in His precious name, Amen.
