FREE GIFT

Romans 4:4

"Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due." ESV

Our God loves us so much He gave the most precious gift, salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. We cannot receive a gift by working for it. If we work for it, it is not a gift, but something we earned. We can only receive His gift by recognizing our need for it, repenting, and accepting it.

Lord, help us to remember that we are no longer held responsible for our sinful nature. It's not because of anything we did to earn it, but Your great love and mercy is the gift You gave. In Your name we pray, Amen.

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES

Proverbs 23:4

"Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist." ESV

The theme of this world is to get rich, accumulate things, have the latest, keep up with those around us. No matter how we try to achieve this, it takes a lot of time and energy. So often, people are so busy making money they have little or no time to enjoy the things it can buy them. By the time the age of retirement and rest approaches, health issues are present and the years of overwork and pushing ourselves to the limit takes its toll. God tells us to live modestly and seek Him. Are we wearing ourselves out for the things of this world or are we nourishing our bodies and souls for Christ?

Lord, forgive us for losing sight of the truly important, eternal things of this life. Help us use the wisdom You have given us to live modestly and to use our energy and time as good stewards of the time and energy You give us. In Your name we pray, Amen.

WHO DID IT?

Isaiah 26:12

"O Lord, you will ordain peace for us, for you have indeed done for us all our works." ESV

Isn't it gratifying to think back on some of the things we accomplished in our lives and they have been really good things. There's nothing wrong with remembering and feeling good about those things. The problem sneaks in when we fail to remember that it is the Lord who has done those things through us. He gave us the talent, the time, the strength, the gifts, and the very breath to complete the work. Without Him, we wouldn't have done anything.

Heavenly Father, forgive us because we have, at times, failed to remember that You have done all things through us and for us. Help us to always give You glory for the good things You chose to do through us. Without You, we know we are helpless. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

FIRM NOT FLABBY

1 Corinthians 15:8

"Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain." ESV

More often than not, there are things in this world that catch us off guard, sort of knock us off our feet. That's the way the world is. But while we live in this world, we are not of this world. We are free to choose how we think, feel, and act when our world goes crazy. We can stand strong and confident, knowing that Jesus Christ has already won this battle a long time ago. All we have to do is believe that and trust that He will work all things for our good and His glory. He has promised us that our faith and trust will never go unrewarded.

Heavenly Father, we can't thank You enough for the victory of Jesus Christ at the cross. Help us to use our faith and trust so that we can stand strong and not be shaken by the things of this world. In Jesus' name, Amen.

WORKING RIGHT

Ephesians 6:7

"Rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man." ESV

How many of us have lost our enthusiasm to the point we do our work with barely adequate quality and an attitude of "just get the job done?" Have we forgotten that the Lord sees our hearts and the effort we exert. When we work, whatever it may be, let it be a work of praise to our God, who enables us to even breathe. We work for Him, not for people.

Heavenly Father, we praise You that You have given us the ability to work and to provide the way to meet our daily needs. Please help us to remember that You are the One we are serving, not companies or humans. Give us enthusiasm to work as we remember it is all for You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

WHAT A WORK OUT!

Philippians 2:12 "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." ESV

How do we "work out" our own salvation? It is much like cleaning house, getting rid of all the dirt. Or it is like heating metal to the point that all the impurity is gone. Working out our salvation is allowing ourselves to experience difficult, uncomfortable, and sometimes frightening things to drive out worldliness in ourselves. Then our God will work in holiness and purity that is characteristic of His children.

Heavenly Father, we pray that You would help us stay at Your side as we work out the impurity in our lives. We desire to be pure and holy, to be Yours. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

NOW HIRING

Matthew 9:37,38

"Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." NIV

"Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest." KJV

As Christians, we all have at least one spiritual gift. We are to be putting it to work for the Lord's kingdom. Not only that, since the darkness of the world is so great, there are barely enough Christians who are willing to spend the energy to toil in the fields. How sad it is for Christians to be lazy and complacent. If we pray, God will speak to the hearts of His people to go out into the fields where the lost and dying live. He will provide the workers necessary to bring in all that will come. But we have to pray.

Heavenly Father, search our hearts to see if we are negligent to do work in Your fields. Stir our hearts for prayer to send Christian workers to shine the light of Christ on those who are perishing. We thank You for sending workers out so that sinners will be saved. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

OUR TROUBLES WILL BE WORTH IT

2 Corinthians 4:17

"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." NIV

"For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." KJV

What is one of the first things we are apt do when trouble comes our way? We react in a number of negative ways. We complain or go all the way into total anger and resentment. Have we forgotten that we live in a cursed world? A world that is full of troubles and tragedy and there is no respecter of persons. It rains on the just and the unjust. As Christians, our faith should be such that we are reminded in difficult times that this is the way of suffering, we all pass this way, and all the while our Lord is with us. The greatest thing to remember is that these problems are only temporary. If we stand strong in the Lord, the glorious eternity we will experience will erase any bad thing this world caused us.

Heavenly Father, we just praise and worship Your holy name that You have prepared for us eternal perfection with You. Forgive us for forgetting that when trouble comes to us. Fill us with the comfort and peace of the Holy Spirit during difficult times. And help us look up, knowing what is waiting for us. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

WORK OUT

How do we "work out" our salvation? It is much like cleaning
house, getting rid of the dirt. Or it is like heating metal to get
the impurities out. We have to put ourselves through difficult,
uncomfortable, and frightening things to work out the worldliness in ourselves. We work out the sinful worldliness, God works in the holiness and purity befitting a child of God.

Heavenly Father, we pray that you would help us to work out our salvation, so that we will be pure and holy as your children. In Jesus' name.

Read Philippians 2:12

"Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not
only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--
continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling." (NIV)

"Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my
presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your
own salvation with fear and trembling." (KJV)

NOT ANYTHING WE DID

We did not seek out salvation. By God's grace, the Gospel found us when
we were spiritually dead and bankrupt. If our salvation were dependent
on our own doing, we would remain spiritually dead. Because of this
truth, none of us can brag or think we are better than others.

Read Ephesians 2:8,9

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from
yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast."
(NIV)

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves:
it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." (KJV)

FOOD AND WORK

Food is a life sustaining necessity. The problem is, food does not magically appear in our hands so we can eat. Someone has to hunt the food, grow the food, harvest the food, and prepare the food. We are commanded to be a part of the process that makes food available by exerting effort. Work is
therefore necessary to sustain life. This is even more critical for the spiritual life.

Read 2 Thessalonians 3:10

"For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: 'If a man will not work, he shall not eat.'" (NIV)

"For even when we were with you, this we commanded you,
that if any would not work, neither should he eat." (KJV)
