POWER OF WORDS

Proverbs 12:18

"There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." ESV

What kind of words to we speak that others hear? Do we thoughtlessly talk negatively about others, criticizing, and even crushing their integrity? This kind of talk is no better than driving a knife through someone's heart. Being wise with our words will produce encouragement, protection, and healing to others. Our God honors this kind of talk.

Heavenly Father, we ask for wisdom when we speak so that we will build up and encourage and not cause pain and tarnish the character of others. We pray in the name of Jesus, Amen.

WATCH YOUR MOUTH

Proverbs 21:23

"Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble." ESV

Sometimes our desire to speak what's on our minds is stronger than the control we have on our mouths. It is a matter of the heart. Jesus said it is what comes out of a man' mouth that defiles him. Our responsibility is to be so full of Christ that we will not let our mouths take control. Control takes discipline. Discipline takes effort. Effort takes motivation. Motivation comes from our desire to be like Christ.

Heavenly Father, how we stand in need of forgiveness for allowing our desire to speak to override the control of what we say. Fill us with the Holy Spirit so that we will be motivated to make the effort to be disciplined. Help us to watch our mouths. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

IS YOUR TONGUE SHOWING?

James 3:5

"So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!" ESV

Isn't it amazing that the tongue is small and rests hidden inside the mouth? If the size of the tongue and the place it rests were equal to its power, it would be the largest part of the body. It would be the first and maybe only part of us others would see. The tongue is incredibly powerful. It carries out of us the things we are thinking, intending, and believing. It can encourage and lift up or it can tear down and destroy. But....praise be to the Lord that He has given us the ability and the choice to control it.

Heavenly Father, forgive us for choosing to let our tongues speak things that are not pleasing to You and that are hurtful to those around us. Forgive us for allowing our tongues to be our sword instead of the sword of the Spirit, Your Word. Help us to use wisdom, discernment, and patience before we speak so that our words will be pleasing to You. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

FAST TALKERS

Proverbs 29:20

"Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them." NIV

"Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him." KJV

How many times have we said something without thinking, just blurting it out, then regretting it? How often have we been quick to spill out words in anger that we don't really mean? We are accountable for every word we speak. Words spoken to another can never be taken back. If we will give our Lord control of our words and stay alert to what we say, He will help us to speak words that encourage, lift up, and provide a positive atmosphere for those around us. The Word says those who speak what's on their mind without thinking are worse than fools.

Heavenly Father, we ask Your forgiveness for those times we have spoken in haste and have caused hurt and problems for others and ourselves. Give us the power through Your Holy Spirit to speak in ways that are pleasing to You. We pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

THE TONGUE

Did you ever wonder why the tongue is small and rests hidden inside the mouth? If its size and placement on our body were in proportion to its capability it would be the first, if not the only thing others would see. It is incredibly powerful. It brings out the thoughts and intents of the heart. It can encourage, yet it can destroy. Thank the Lord He has given us the ability and the choice to control it.

Read James 3:5

"Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark." (NIV)

"Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things.
Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!" (KJV)
