WORN OUT PHRASES

1 Corinthians 4:20

"For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power." ESV

Many Christians have allowed words, phrases, and Christian lingo to have more power in their gatherings and their personal lives than they have the power of God. Words and phrases have as much divine power as wood and metal idols. We can talk about God and the things of God all day, but the power is not in the words. The power is in the Holy Spirit working through us because we have put on Christ and have done away with our own prideful natures.

Lord, forgive us for relying on Christian lingo to get us by and do the work for us of making us look spiritual. Help us to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit so that Your power will flow through us and reach lost souls for Your kingdom. In Your great name we pray, Amen.

DON'T TALK ABOUT IT, LIVE IT!

1 Corinthians 4:20
"For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk, but in power." ESV

We can talk about the things of God, quote scriptures, sing choruses, and state our beliefs, but there is no power in talking and discussing the things of God. The power of God is unleashed when we live God's Word and demonstrate His kingdom daily in our lives through the enabling of the Holy Spirit.

Heavenly Father, we ask for wisdom to keep from merely speaking words that have no power, but to live our lives in the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name, Amen.

WHAT'S THAT COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH?

Ephesians 4:29

"Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." ESV

These days it seems we are all critics of others. Maybe we think so highly of ourselves, the flaws in others stand out so clearly. Perhaps we think so lowly of ourselves, we speak of the faults in others so we don't look so bad in comparison. Then it could just be that our minds are set toward a negative perspective about most things. Negativity steals our joy and eager anticipation of the future. Worse yet, it does the same thing to those who hear us spew our negativity. Just like a corrupted file on a computer, our corrupt talk stops the flow of God from coming through our lives.

Heavenly Father, please search our hearts and allow us to identify any negative thought that might come out of our mouths in words. Guard our minds and our lips so that what we speak will encourage and lift up those who hear us. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

WATCH YOUR MOUTH

Ephesians 4:29

"Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." ESV

Words that come out of our mouths may not only be unholy and profane, but the words we say can also tear down and humiliate others. We never know who may be within hearing distance when we speak. God hears, and He will judge us. Others will hear and either be discouraged or be influenced to speak in the same way. We are responsible to watch what we say.

Heavenly Father, forgive us for speaking things that bring dishonor to the name of Christ. Forgive us for saying words that hurt and tear down. Help us to watch our words carefully so that we will build up and encourage, bringing honor to our Lord. In His name we pray, Amen.

FAST TALKERS

Proverbs 29:20

"Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them." NIV

"Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him." KJV

How many times have we said something without thinking, just blurting it out, then regretting it? How often have we been quick to spill out words in anger that we don't really mean? We are accountable for every word we speak. Words spoken to another can never be taken back. If we will give our Lord control of our words and stay alert to what we say, He will help us to speak words that encourage, lift up, and provide a positive atmosphere for those around us. The Word says those who speak what's on their mind without thinking are worse than fools.

Heavenly Father, we ask Your forgiveness for those times we have spoken in haste and have caused hurt and problems for others and ourselves. Give us the power through Your Holy Spirit to speak in ways that are pleasing to You. We pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
