TRUE RELIGION

The original Latin meaning of the word religion is to tie, fasten, or bind,
like a ligament functions in the muscle structure of the human body. When our religion consists of being tied to tradition and rituals, it makes us rigid and susceptible to breaking apart. When the effect of our religion is mercy and giving to the needs of others, we become a living tie between the flowing, living love of the Lord and others around us. Being tied (bound) to the Lord is our choice. It is a choice that gives us the power to stay spiritually free from worldly ways. That is true religion.

Read James 1:27

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." (NIV)

"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." (KJV)

I DIDN'T DO IT

Self satisfaction and pride in our abilities and accomplishments are an open door to rob and dethrone God of the honor He deserves. When we admire our selves, we create an idol in God's place. Remember, all we are and all we have is from Him.

Read Deuteronomy 8:17,18

"You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have
produced this wealth for me." But remember the Lord your God, for it is
he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his
covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today."

BRIDLE THE TONGUE

Being religious is acting out external religious behaviors. Those behaviors are totally worthless unless there is the internal, living Spirit of God that keeps us in control of our sinful nature. Our speech is the most difficult to control.

Read James 1:26

"If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless."
