IT'S REALLY GOT A HOLD ON US

Romans 7:25

"Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in my sinful nature, a slave to the law of sin." NIV

"I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin." KJV

Do we really grasp the captivity of sin that Christ freed us from by His death and resurrection? We are free to make a conscious decision to live the way our Lord intends for us to live. We no longer have to be enslaved by temptation and ungodly ways. When we get our minds off God, it is natural for us to fall back into our old fleshly ways. If we commit ourselves to engulf ourselves in communion with God and His Word, we will stay safely in the freedom for which Christ paid such a precious price.

Heavenly Father, how we praise You that You sent Your Son to set us free from our own fleshly natures and from the grasp of Satan. Give us more hunger for Your Word and to spend time in quiet communion with You so that we will not fall back into our old natures. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

STAND FIRM TO STAY FREE

Galatians 5:1

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." NIV

"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage." KJV

The lives we lived before we were born again were lives of deep ruts of bondage to our own wills and to the strongholds brought about by the evil one. When Christ made us a new creature, we still have the responsibility to fight the old nature. Because the ruts of the old life are so deep, it is easy to fall back into old patterns. If we stand firm by the power of the Holy Spirit and of the Word of God, we will not be caught in the trap of being captive to sin, losing our freedom.

Heavenly Father, Your mercy toward us is everlasting. Help us have hunger for the fullness of Your Holy Spirit and for the Word so that we will have the weapons to fight the old nature and not get tangled up in the old ways. We humbly ask this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

SET FREE

God's Word is clear that, as Christians, we are set free from the mastery of sin to become slaves of the Master. There is no middle ground, where we can be our own masters. We are slaves of sin or we are slaves of Christ. The lives we live will reveal who our master is.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that your yoke is easy and your burden
light. We thank you always that you bought us as slaves with your blood and we are free from sin. In Jesus' name.

Read Romans 6:18

"You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
(NIV)

"Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness." (KJV)

REMEMBER WHAT GOD HAS DONE

We can become so comfortable in our earthly possessions and our lives
that we forget about the fact that it all belongs to God and it is by His
grace and mercy that He has allowed us to experience it. We must watch
our attitude about our prosperity and worldly possessions that they don't blind us to who we really are in God's eyes.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the many blessings you have given to us. We pray that you help us to never allow these blessings to become more important to us than our relationship to You. In Jesus' name.

Read Deuteronomy 6:11b,12

".......the when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery." (NIV)

".......when thou shalt have eaten and be full; Then beware lest thou
forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt,
from the house of bondage." (KJV)

DANGER IN SEEKING RICHES

Those who seek only after material things are most vulnerable to giving in to temptations to gain more. They become trapped in their search for riches, making unwise decisions that eventually destroy their souls. Loving to be rich is the source from which many evil things come.

Read 1 Timothy 6:9,10

"People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." (NIV)

"But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." (KJV)

As Christians we are to always be watchful and on the alert to the deception that surrounds us with well hidden traps. The deceiver is the evil one and seeks to get us off the true path in these ways: Subtly, through our senses and thoughts; Masquerading as the truth with logical spiritual and religious philosophies; and, Forcefully, through tribulations and trials that discourage us and cause us to
question our Lord. Watch out for these traps, they are everywhere.

Read 1 Peter 5:8

"Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

CAPTIVATED

Being a slave to sin is the same as being captivated by it. When we are captivated by something or someone, we are held to it by attraction, attention, or interest. If we allow our captivation to continue, we become slaves to it. If we become captivated by the things of this world, we will be in sin and will reap the consequences of sin. If we become captivated by Christ, we will produce the fruit and likeness of Christ.

Read Romans 6:16

"Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?"
