DESTROYING AND CAPTURING THOUGHTS

2 Corinthians 10:5

"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ." ESV

If we are discerning, we will recognize thoughts and words that are lies and not from God. In fact, we are to filter all thoughts and if they do not align with the Word of God, we are to destroy them.

Heavenly Father, we confess that we do not take the time to filter every thought and every word. There are just so many. You have guaranteed us that if we seek You earnestly with our whole hearts, You will give us discernment for all that we think and hear. Help us draw nearer to You and take captive those thoughts and words that are ungodly. We pray in the name of Jesus, Amen.

CAPTURE THOSE THOUGHTS

2 Corinthians 10:5

"We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." NIV

"Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." KJV

Aren't we all familiar with those nagging, negative thoughts that make us worry and fret? It seems like those thoughts just keep going around and around in our heads to keep us from having any peace. Those thoughts are from the enemy, who wants us to be fearful, to question the truth, and to question God. If we will remember that we have the authority to take these thoughts, bind them up, and take them to Christ, He will take them and exchange them for peace and contentment. If we let these thoughts get the best of us, we will be on edge, anxious, and mistrusting of God and man.

Heavenly Father, forgive us for allowing the enemy to place thoughts in our heads that create doubt and fear. Help us to use the authority You have given us through the name of Christ, to take those thoughts captive and bring them to You. And we thank You for the peace and joy You bring to us for doing so. In Jesus' precious name we pray, Amen.

DON'T GET COMFORTABLE HERE

If we are strangers and aliens in this world that implies we belong
to the heavenly realm and not the earthly one. If we allow earthly
things to grab our affections, Godly things will fade. Then we are at
risk for becoming captives to this world. It is crucial to stay away
from those things that tempt us.

Read 1 Peter 2:11

"Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to
abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul." (NIV)

"Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain
from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul" (NIV)

DANGER IN SEEKING RICHES

Those who seek only after material things are most vulnerable to giving in to temptations to gain more. They become trapped in their search for riches, making unwise decisions that eventually destroy their souls. Loving to be rich is the source from which many evil things come.

Read 1 Timothy 6:9,10

"People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." (NIV)

"But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." (KJV)

As Christians we are to always be watchful and on the alert to the deception that surrounds us with well hidden traps. The deceiver is the evil one and seeks to get us off the true path in these ways: Subtly, through our senses and thoughts; Masquerading as the truth with logical spiritual and religious philosophies; and, Forcefully, through tribulations and trials that discourage us and cause us to
question our Lord. Watch out for these traps, they are everywhere.

Read 1 Peter 5:8

"Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

CAPTIVATED

Being a slave to sin is the same as being captivated by it. When we are captivated by something or someone, we are held to it by attraction, attention, or interest. If we allow our captivation to continue, we become slaves to it. If we become captivated by the things of this world, we will be in sin and will reap the consequences of sin. If we become captivated by Christ, we will produce the fruit and likeness of Christ.

Read Romans 6:16

"Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?"
