WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN

Obadiah 1:4

"Though you soar aloft like an eagle, though your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down, declares the Lord." ESV

It is a tragic deception to think that material blessings are evidence of being favored and blessed by God. God's favor and disfavor are not measured by material things, success, failure, and tragedy. Those who are financially and socially acceptable tend to get focused on the blessings and become proud of their achievements. The Word states that pride come before a fall. No matter how blessed we are pride will cause us to fall. The more our Lord blesses us, the more we much walk in humility. If we don't, God will bring us down and humble us.

Lord, forgive us for being proud of and taking credit for the many things we have accomplished. Help us to always remember Who provided the blessing. We pray humbly that we would be aware of where we stand in comparison to You. In Your gracious name we pray, Amen.

THE HIGH POSITION OF HUMILITY

James 1:9

"Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation." ESV

It's so much easier to be thankful and to praise God when things are going well. When those who are struggling with heavy burdens glorify God and live in complete devotion to Him, they are showing true faith. Regardless of our circumstances, knowing our spiritual poverty and approaching the Lord with humble hearts is what our God looks on with great pleasure and favor.

Lord, forgive us for taking our blessings for granted. Give us hearts that see our true spiritual poverty. Help us to take our eyes off things we have and to realize our true wealth is in You. In Your great name we pray, Amen.

WE RUN ON EMPTY AND DON'T KNOW IT

Matthew 5:3

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." ESV

Being poor in spirit is an attitude toward ourselves that keeps us aware of our total need of God's grace and mercy. Without this attitude, we have no access to the riches of Christ. With it, we have the fullness of the kingdom of heaven right now.

Heavenly Father, this world has so many things that keep us with attitudes that are far from where You have taught us they should be. Help us to keep the mind of Christ so that our lives will be examples of Your love and mercy. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

Obadiah 1:3,4

"The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, 'who will bring me down to the ground?' Though you soar aloft like the eagle, though your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down, declares the Lord." ESV

Some people have a very inflated view of themselves. In fact, some are so in love with themselves they believe they are seen by all others as wonderful and magnificent. They are so deceived by their pride that they believe they are above the laws of God and man. God will allow them to continue in their deception for a time, but will bring them to reality at some point. It would be wise for us to examine ourselves, be real about who we are, and keep ourselves from falling into this kind of evil pride. Yes, it can happen to any of us. We can fall from any level.

Heavenly Father, we ask that you would help us to examine ourselves honestly to keep a true perspective on who we really are, to see ourselves as You see us. Then we know You will be glorified through us. We pray this in Jesus' name, Amen.

LOWLY AND HUMBLE ENTRY

1 Corinthians 1:28,29

"God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God." ESV

It was God's plan to have His Son enter humanity in a lowly and humble way. The lesson to learn here is that royalty and riches in the Kingdom of God have nothing to do with material things.

Heavenly Father, let this time we celebrate the birth of Immanuel, God in flesh, remind us of the important things in life. Riches and pleasures of this world are not what brings us true peace, joy, and eternal life. We bow humbly in Your presence and ask that we remember what is truly important. In Jesus' name, Amen.

CLEAN FEET FOR EVERYBODY

John 13:14

"If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet." ESV

When Jesus took of His cloak, got down on the floor, and washed the feet of His disciples, He was setting an example for us. He was not teaching us how to wash feet, but how to treat one another in love and humility, no matter what position we hold in this life. No one is great and mighty, except the Lord God Himself. We are all one in Him, on equal ground, and we are to humbly serve one another.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for plainly showing us how we are to live and serve others. Forgive us for failing to do this so many times. Remove the scales from our eyes and hearts so that we will humbly serve one another as Jesus Christ taught us by His example. In His precious name we pray, Amen.

DO IT OR GOD WILL

James 4:10

"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you." ESV

To humble ourselves is to see others as more important. Being humble is thinking about ourselves less and about others more. If we refuse to humble ourselves, God will do it for us, because He loves us and desires for us to walk in humility as He did. If we walk in humility, He will lift us up.

Heavenly Father, forgive us for our self-pride. Help us to see ourselves as we really are so that we will walk in humility and thereby be pleasing to You. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

HUMBLE ENTRY

1 Corinthians 1:28,29

"He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the things that are not--to nullify the things that are, so that no one could boast before Him." NIV

"And the base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and the things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence." KJV

It was God's plan to have His Son enter humanity in a lowly and humble way. The lesson to learn here is that royalty and riches in the Kingdom of God have nothing to do with material things.

Heavenly Father, we confess that we are a people who think of material things, not just necessities, but things for comfort, pleasure, and status. Forgive us for being selfish and worldly. Search our hearts and place a hunger for the things of God rather than the things of this world. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

HUMBLE PEOPLE

1 Peter 5:6

"Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time." NIV

"Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time." KJV

It is a very humbling thing to take the lowest position in the kingdom of believers. It is so easy to make sure we're seen or to tell others about the things we have done for the Lord. If we lift ourselves up in front of others, that is our only reward and God will make sure we are humbled in His time and His way. God promises that He will lift us up in His perfect time. It is far better to humble ourselves now than to have the hand of God humble us later.

Heavenly Father, how far we are from being where You want us to be. Forgive us for our pride and put within us the desire to put You and all others first. Help us to see the humility Jesus displayed always while He was here on earth. We pray in His precious name, Amen.

UNSELFISH AND HUMBLE

Philippians 2:3
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves." NIV

"Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than themselves." KJV

Jesus did not come to earth as God. He gave up his deity to become a man. That was the most unselfish act ever done. He was pure and sinless, yet died the death of a criminal. That was the most humble act ever done. We are to be like Christ. In our relationships with fellow believers, we are to give up our egos and human pride to love and serve others as He did.

Heavenly Father, forgive us for thinking of ourselves and failing to consider the needs of others. Help us to be more like Your Son, who gave himself and served all without thinking of Himself. We pray in His precious name, Amen.

HUMBLE YOURSELF

Being humble is not an action, it is a constant state of being.
It is always being aware of our place, our status in light of
the life Christ lived. Since we have been bought by Christ with
His blood, we are His and we are always in His presence. Our
responsibility is to keep ourselves humble. God is the one that
will shine His light on us when He chooses to do so.

Heavenly Father, we are in need of your help in keeping ourselves humble. We pray for openness to the prompting of the Holy Spirit to let us know when we fall short. In Jesus' name.

Read James 4:10

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up." (NIV)

"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up." (KJV)

WHAT GOD RESPECTS

The most elaborate and ornate churches, temples, and shrines are only
impressive to the human senses. God is not impressed with them at all.
After all, He made the awesome universe. What gets God's attention as
the most beautiful temple is the individual that is humble in spirit. One
who grieves the sin in this world and gives total respect to the things of
God.

Read Isaiah 66:2

"'Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?'
declares the Lord. 'This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and
contrite in spirit, and trembles at My word.'" (NIV)

"For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have
been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is
poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word." (KJV)
