James 1:27
"Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father is
this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself
unstained from the world." ESV
The original
Latin meaning of the word religion is to tie, fasten, or bind, like a ligament
functions in the muscle structure of the human body. When our religion consists
of being tied to tradition and rituals, it makes us rigid and susceptible to
breaking apart. When our religion consists of mercy and giving to the needs of
others, we become living ties between the flowing love of the Lord and others
around us. That is true religion.
Heavenly
Father, examine our hearts to see if we have held on to old traditions and
patterns that have taken the place of the true Spirit of love and giving. Help
us to turn from these old rigid ways so that we will be free to pour out Your
love and mercy on those who are needing to receive it. In the name of Jesus we
pray, Amen.
