become greater; I must become less." NIV
"He must
increase, but I must decrease." KJV
What did the
people think as they saw our Lord beaten beyond recognition, hanging on the
cross that was the most humiliating execution that existed? John the Baptist's
words did not make any sense at that moment. When Jesus rose from the grave,
leaving the tomb empty, His disciples realized then that Jesus had decreased to
the lowest part of hell so that we could follow Him. We can now give up our
right to ourselves, decrease, so that we will be able to share His increase by
becoming the Bride of the King of Kings. John the Baptist foretold the reason
Christ came, died, and rose again. Our Lord completed His commission. Now it is
our turn to decrease until there is nothing left of our own selfishness, but we
are full of Jesus Christ.
Heavenly Father,
there are no words to let us tell You how much we love You and thank You for the
great sacrifice You made for us. But we do ask You to give us what we need to
decrease, to rid ourselves of what we want and to live the way You want us live.
We pray this in Jesus' name, Amen.
